First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain (first) holds its first service.

The church is built at the corner of Centre Street and Star Lane near today’s 650 Centre Street. The congregation was established in 1840 and met first in Village Hall and a Unitarian Church. This small chapel is destroyed by fire on September 26, 1856 and replaced by a larger building across the street in 1859.*
